This anti-smoking mural was designed during by the Treasure Island Summer Camp. Axel Anguiano was the primary designer of the mural with help from all of the kids at camp. During the design phase of the mural, the kids also discussed the health effects of smoking as well as ways to deal with peer pressure. The mural is on display at the old gas station/thrift store across from the City Park. Anti-tobacco projects such as this have been funded by the Utah Department of Health.
The AmeriCorps NCCC team, Silver 4, has sadly departed from Green River, Utah to head back to base in Sacramento, CA. The team had a wonderful time and will never forget their experience. The team was proud to have helped begin the construction effort on the first ever Habitat for Humanity house and are happy to have made the Treasure Island Summer Camp run so smoothly. They will definitely miss the kids and the staff at both the Epicenter and the Community Center. The team will be returning to their respective homes in Maine, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Connecticut and New York on July 21st after being away for 10 months. Please visit the AmeriCorps website at www.americorps.gov to find out more information about the program!

Silver 4 is extremely excited for the upcoming celebration for the July 4th celebration on Monday! They have been working with the children of the Treasure Island Summer Camp to prepare some fun events during the evening. Some of these include food, games and a performance by the children themselves! The celebration begins at 6:00pm with a bicycle parade and pie baking contest followed by a flag ceremony and patriotic program at 7:00pm. Afterwards there will be hotdogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings too! The team will then begin running games for all. There will be relay races, a fishing contest, ring toss, and much more. And of course, the fireworks will be happening at 9:00 pm at the Shooting Sports Park! Please come out and enjoy all the fun and help Silver 4 celebrate their last week here in Green River! Hope to see everyone there!

Here are a couple photos of the AmeriCorps NCCC team, Silver 4, in action on the Habitat for Humanity site and at the Community Center during summer camp.
The AmeriCorps NCCC team, Silver 4, has been helping the staff at the Community Center run the Treasure Island Summer Camp and they encourage all to participate. It has been a wonderful outlet for children to be creative, play and learn about many different subjects. The weekly schedule includes horseback riding on Mondays, gardening on Tuesdays, treasure hunts and music on Wednesdays, swimming on Thursdays, archery or dance on Fridays, and much more! A special addition to the program are the anti-smoking and Too Good For Drugs learning sessions that focus on avoiding outside pressures and making the right choices.
The summer camp has allowed Silver 4 and the Community Center staff to open their arms to the children of Green River and new kids join everyday. Unfortunately, the camp will only run until July 8th, which is the team’s last day. So far, it has been a wonderful experience for Silver 4 and the kids with many great times to be had during the next 3 weeks!
The AmeriCorps NCCC Team, Silver 4, has been serving in Green River for the past 4 weeks and has been having a wonderful time.
Since they arrived on May 17th, the team has felt welcomed and part of the Green River family. Each staff member involved has been more than friendly and willing to help the team become acclimated to the town and the culture around them.
The members of Silver 4 are presently assisting in a wide range of areas such as; helping to provide social services to community residents, assisting in the development and implementation of youth recreation/prevention programs as well as helping to build the first Habitat for Humanity Home within the community.
The team is also involved with Boys and Girls Club Summer Camp which entails leading activities such as music, dance, cooking, gardening, swimming, archery, baseball, and equestrian activities. The team is excited for this opportunity to share their skills and experience with the children.
The P.A.C.T focuses their mission on promoting healthy lifestyles while providing affordable housing assistance. Member Miranda Waldoch states “knowing that the members of P.A.C.T. and the staff at the Community Center are so heavily invested in helping the town, motivates our team to feel the same fervor for the project.”
The experience has already been so memorable and the team can’t wait to see what else is in store for the next 4 weeks. Thank you Green River for making the first half of Silver 4’s stay so great!

We’re looking forward to their arrival day on May 17. They’ll be serving our community for eight weeks. Locals may contact us today if you have any requests for side projects for this team.

Our Lutheran volunteer friends from Boulder, Colorado!
What Did You Do For Spring Break?
Well one group consisting of members of Lutheran Churches in and around Boulder, Colorado (30 people to be exact) spent their Spring Break painting and fixing up the Community Center/ Boys & Girls Club in Green River, Utah.
They brought with them tools, plants, funding and energy. Because they wanted to give to the community, paint was purchased at ACE Hardware in Green River. Ladders and scaffolding went up and the delicious lemon tinted paint flowed on to the 100 year old building. They paid High Desert Excavation to remove old tree stumps and roots so that gravel can be placed at a later date when funding is available.
Members of the group including Pastor Chad had visited the Boys & Girls Club last summer and saw that it needed their help. The Community Center was established in 2001 (This is their 10 year anniversary) and in 2008 the ceiling of the building that they were occupying collapsed due to extreme rainfall and weather. They moved to the much smaller building that they currently occupy thanks to the efforts of the City of Green River and the Emery County Commissioners. Shortages in grant and donation funding have not allowed the fix up that the building needed.
Executive Director, Joni Pace said, “Thanks to our Lutheran Friends, our building got the face lift that it needed, it is a fresh start into spring and the beginning of even more great things to come”!
From the Community Center/Boys & Girls Club of Green River; Thank You Atonement Lutheran Church Boulder, Colorado, First Evangelical Lutheran Church Longmont, Colorado, Trinity Lutheran Church Boulder, Colorado, Christ The Servant Louisville, Colorado, your love and generosity will benefit this community for years to come and we will always remember our Lutheran Friends from Colorado!

Today was Gold 5’s last day in Green River. They left at 8 this morning to head back to Sacramento where they will be preparing for their next project in Montana. Since arriving the first week of January, Gold 5 has been incredibly busy making waves and serving the community of Green River. Everyone worked in the schools helping in classes from Kindergarten to High School with reading and math and lesson plans and grading. They were even busier when not in school. At the Thrift Store, they reorganized both the display areas and the back room building a number of shelves to help better store and organize shipments of donations. In the Community Center kitchen, they cooked, baked, and delivered meals to the seniors. Their energy and enthusiasm helped greatly in the Afterschool Program where they read with kids and helped with homework, planned and organized activities, and brought in kids who rarely came to the program. Outside of these areas, they all helped on other projects such as mapping bike routes, tracking team economic impact, researching and writing grants, planning a skate off, helping with HeadStart, and being awesome. Adventurous, innovative, and motivated- Thank you to Gold 5- Legends of the Wild West!
